Hi.
I’m Em.
I’m a highly sensitive vet student in my 20’s learning how to navigate adulthood in this [overwhelmingly] beautiful world. And meet the demands of veterinary school too. I’m here to share raw experiences with my community because I believe in the importance of humanness. This shit’s hard, but the load is a little less when it’s shared. Imagine what would happen if we joined as a team to collectively carry the weight instead of bearing it all by ourselves.
I don’t recall exactly when I began writing although I think it was in my early teens. I do, however, remember when it began to change my life: high school.
Paper gives me a place to throw all of life’s mess. Paper gives me time to process the messiness. Paper gives me a space to organize the mess. Paper gives me autonomy, words, and a voice. Writing gives me power.
Yet, writing is also one of my greatest fears. When the metaphysical is manifested into physical form, it can’t be put back. When my thoughts and emotions turn to words, their existence is real. No thank you. I’d rather stuff that shit deep down. Ain’t nobody got time for that. Spoiler: deep down is not the same as being gone. Awkward!
In the years since I began putting words onto paper, I have discovered that telling my story brings healing. Just like turning my emotions into words, telling my story brings truth to my experience. But that’s far from the most powerful piece. Many of the most impactful moments in my life have come to be through another human’s courage to share their story with me.
